Within the court systems and legal world there are two primary branches of the law that most individuals will have experience with, if at all. These are the branches of Civil Law and Criminal Law. In Criminal Law one is being charged with an offense against society while under Civil Law one is being charged with a wrongdoing against another individual.

One of the key differences in the real world is that many civil court cases end up being settled out of court. These are most often lawsuits and are being brought against another for the purpose of gaining financial restitution for negligence or wrongdoing. If a satisfactory settlement can be negotiated then both parties are usually better served by accepting the agreed upon amount rather than suffering through long and expensive trials. A criminal court case will rarely be settled in such a manner, although a bargain plea might be entered, and generally there is a very strong and critical need for an experienced trial lawyer.

The set of skills that a Clarksville criminal defense attorney has gained must also include extensive "in the court room" trial experience. It is not enough to know the law, one must have spent ample time in front of judges, juries and witnesses in order to successfully protect and defend clients. There are pressures and timing issues that only real life courtroom time can adequately prepare one for. Under criminal charges one can be facing financial penalties and lengthy time behind bars. This is not the time for choosing someone that is learning the ropes.
